Finding our shadow self is indeed eye-opening, and as a result, can be life-changing!

Carl Jung came up with the term “shadow self” to describe the hidden parts of our personality.

While it might sound intimidating, these buried aspects of our personality play a big role in how we think, feel, and act.

How do we get to know and recognise this part of us?

  • Self-Reflection: Self-reflection is about taking the time to think about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Notice patterns or triggers that might reveal parts of yourself you don’t usually acknowledge.
  • Journaling: Writing about your experiences and reactions can help you uncover those hidden sides, and it’s a great way to connect with what’s under the surface when we see it in our own written word.
  • Mindfulness & Meditation: Practices like mindfulness and meditation can help you observe your inner world without judgment, making it easier to recognise your shadow. What Is Mindfulness?
  • Therapy: A counsellor can be a game-changer. for instance, they can guide you through shadow work and help you understand these deeper parts of yourself.
  • Creative Outlets: Dive into something creative like painting, drawing, writing, dancing, or making music. Expressing yourself can bring the unconscious to light in ways words can’t always manage.

The goal isn’t to eliminate your shadow self—it’s about understanding and accepting it as part of who you are.

As a result of practicing these tips it can lead to a more authentic, whole version of you. For instance, it’s an enlightening experience that, empowers us to look further than we have ever looked before.
